How much do you know about the difference between wood screws and self-tapping screws?

In life, how should wood screws and self-tapping screws be distinguished? Both wood screws and self-tapping screws belong to external thread fasteners. So where are the differences between them?

Self Tapping Srews

1. Wood screws

A wood screw is a screw designed specifically for wood. It can be screwed directly into a wooden component to fasten a metal part with a through hole to a wooden component. This connection is a detachable connection. There are 7 types of wood screws in accordance with national standards, among which the cross-slot wood screw is the most commonly used, and the cross-slot countersunk wood screw is the most widely used among the cross-slot wood screws.

After the wood screw enters the wood, it can be embedded in it very firmly. If the wood is not rotten, it is impossible for us to pull it out. Even if you pull it out forcibly, it will damage the wood and bring out the nearby wood. Therefore, we need to use tools to screw the wood screw out. Another point we need to pay attention to is that the wood screw must be screwed in with a screwdriver. The wood screw cannot be forced in with a hammer, which is easy to damage the wood around the wood screw and the connection is not tight. The consolidation ability of wood screws is stronger than that of nails, and they can be removed and replaced, which is less likely to damage the wood surface and is more convenient to use.

2. Self-tapping screws

The threads on the self-tapping screw screw are special self-tapping screw threads, which are mainly used to connect two thin metal components. Self-tapping screws can tap by themselves. They have high hardness and can be directly screwed into the holes of the components to form corresponding internal threads in the components.

Self-tapping screws can tap internal threads on metal bodies to form thread engagement and play a tightening role. However, due to its high thread bottom diameter, when used for wood products, the cutting into the wood will be shallow, and the thread pitch is small, and there are fewer wood structures between each two threads. Therefore, it is not recommended to use self-tapping screws for wooden installations, especially for loose wood.

The above are some differences between wood screws and self-tapping screws. When we use them, we should use them according to our actual situation.
